Chimney & Fireplace Maintenance

While chimney and fireplace repairs and cleanings may appear to be overwhelming undertakings, there are several basic things you can perform that do not require the assistance of a certified professional. These are some commonly asked questions to help you with fireplace upkeep.

  • Do I need to clean my fireplace if it smells?

YES. Usually, if the fireplace has an odor, it is usually because there is a buildup of creosote in the flue.

  • Should I clean out my fireplace ash every time after I light the fireplace?

NO. It's best to leave at least an inch of ash to cradle the embers rather than removing all of the ash out.

If you are done with the fireplace for the season, or don't intend to use it for an extended period of time, then you can clean out the ash because it will leave a residual smell.

  • Do I need a chimney cover or bird guard on the fireplace top?

YES. This will keep the rain and animals free and clear of your fireplace and wood stove.
